USE: An active ingredient for freshness preservative for plants, useful as a plant growth regulator, capable of maintaining various kinds of plants stable in a fresh state with a low concentration in agricultural and horticultural field for a long period, suitable for preserving freshness of plants favorably growing and flowering stems, leaves, buds, flowers, etc., or as a long-lived agent and showing no phytotoxicity to plants.
PREPARATION: A compound shown by formula III is oxidized optionally in a solvent in the presence of an oxidizing agent such as N-oxide of tertiary amine, e.g., N-methylmorpholine N-oxide by adding a catalytic amount of osmium tetroxide and the prepared compound is reacted with an organic acid in an organic solvent and finally subjected to Bayer-Villiger reaction to give a compound shown by formula I when R
1 and R
2 are H or acyl.
