Air is forced through a mixture of water and a surfactant in a shear type foamer at low pressure to produce a stable foam of small air bubbles in water. The foam is pumped into the suspension entering the concentrator and the bubbles attach to the solids in the suspension. The mixture of foam and suspension is released within a baffle in the concentrator tank, causing the surfactant shielded air bubbles to lift the solids to which they have become attached and form a blanket of concentrated sludge. A rotating skimmer head removes an upper layer of the sludge blanket whereas the clarified effluent flows under the baffle and out over an annular weir for discharge. The concentrated sludge removed from the concentrator is introduced into an anaerobic digester, along with primary sludge from the primary settling tank of the system.
